1st Birthday Cakes

I absolutely love kids birthday parties. Especially 1st birthdays. They are my favorite. This week I was lucky enough to be booked for TWO 1st birthday parties.
Here's one of the cakes I did. This was a BIG cake. Its a three tier (8", 10", 12") and feeds about 88-118 people. I made it out of chocolate and strawberry filling. Its frosted in hot pink buttercream and then I added zebra frosting sheets to the middle tier, and did hand painted zebra tiaras, bow and #1 out of fondant.  I also did a matching smash cake, but forgot to take a picture (boo).
This cake I did for a friend. Its a 2 tier (8", 10"). I did the top tier out of carrot cake and cream cheese filling and the bottom tier red velvet and cream cheese filling. I frosted it all in buttercream and did gumpaste flowers, butterflies and the #1. I absolutely LOVE this cake. I always work so much better when I'm given free rein :) OOh, plus I was invited to the party so I actually got to eat some (bonus)!

Getting Started

So after much procrastination I finally have my blog up and running. Thanks SOOO much to my friend Carolann who helped me put it together because as good as I am with cakes I am equally bad with technology :)

I've been making cakes for over a year now. I started by taking a Wilton basic cake decorating class because I had no idea what a crumb coat, torting, or crusting buttercream meant. My son's 2nd birthday was coming up in May and I figured it was as good a time as any to start cake decorating and make a cake for him.

So this is what I came up with. I did chocolate for all the tiers and did buttercream with bits of chopped up Oreo cookies in it. For the decorations I used my new found skills :) I did red piping down the sides and a shell border. I made the clown, seal, and balloons all out of modeling chocolate and voila! I was done. I was very proud of myself and thought I had done an awesome job for it being my first! I even made a little smash cake to go with it. And my friend Karina from http://karinafloresphotography.blogspot.com/ was super nice enough to take these wonderful pictures from me. Aren't they wonderful?!

So anyhow, there's my cake beginning. If you're still reading this, thank you so much for following me! Now let's see how long it takes me to post all my other cake pictures :)
